Eating more Protein Isn't Doing a Damn thing... if you don't do this first!
I am not sure if you saw this post on my social media a couple of weeks ago, but wanted to make sure you saw because the protein advice is everywhere...every macro app, every wellness account you follow all telling you to add more cottage cheese to everything from muffins to your pizza crust.
And yes, we do need to be eating a certain amount of protein each day to maintain and build lean muscle to keep us metabolically healthy and burning our fuel vs storing it... BUT you are still standing in your closet each morning saying a prayer and crossing your fingers before you do up your jeans, still crashing at 2pm and still wide awake at 3am for some ungodly reason.
Here's what no one is telling you, protein doesn't just magically turn into muscle. It has to be processed first. Broken down, converted and cleared...every single gram you eat.
But if you are eating on the run or in a hurry standing at the kitchen counter or stressed out about life in general, a system that is stuck in fight or flight is NOT in the business of processing anything. Its in the business of survival. So all the good protein you are eating doesn't get broken down enough and doesn't become the energy you need or was hoping for. It becomes more inflammation in the body, more cortisol for the liver to manage and more fat stored around your middle.
So when you eat more protein and NOTHING changes, you might assume you are still not eating enough. You are not undereating protein, you are OVERLOADING a system that is already compromised and maxed out.
When I am working with a client that has been cranking up her protein and not feeling any different, we stop chasing grams and we starting asking WHY her body isn't using what she is already eating.
I am not anti-protein. Not at all. But I am pro YOU-ACTUALLY- BEING-ABLE-TO-USE-IT!
Fix the system it has to move through first, then the protein finally starts working for you vs against you.
Eating 160g of protein was never the missing piece, its was just one more thing piled onto a body that was already maxed out.
