Be Selfish

October 21, 2018

Today's post comes from Travis Stoetzel, an amazing trainer based out of the USA, and when this article came across my inbox I had to share it.

It doesn't matter if you are male or female, young or old, a mother or a father.

It's about taking time to look after you so you are happy, healthy and living life.

It may not be easy, but it is well worth the rewards for yourself and everyone around you and that is worth its weight in gold.

Here we go...

Had a guy comment in on one of my videos the other day that was quite the lash out.

He said that I must be one of the most "SELFISH" dudes around.

Selfish because I'm in such great shape and "probably spend your life at the gym".

It made me laugh, but it also made me think a bit.

WHY would this gentlemen lash out and call me so "selfish"?

Upon creeping on his profile a bit, it didn't take long for me to understand.

The dude was pretty out of shape.

Lots of pictures of him drinking and few of him even smoking.

I also saw he was a dad.

Ultimately he called me selfish because I'm fit and in good shape and must have assumed I spend hours in the gym training VS spending time with my family.

The video he commented on was talking about how I feel DADS should be in good shape and how being fit and healthy is a PRIORITY.

I'm guessing that hit a nerve with this guy assuming he feels fitness isn't much of a priority.

More than likely he's too busy drinking and smoking he doesn't have time to train??

Either way, while I'm NOT here to judge, I believe there is an issue with this topic.

BEING SELFISH.

So, what's "being selfish" exactly?

As a DAD, obviously your family should be #1 PRIORITY.

For me, EVERYTHING I do is for my girls.

To ensure they're taken care of, this is where I MUST BE SELFISH.

Selfish in the sense of taking care of one self.

As a DAD, if you neglect yourself thinking it's "selfish" to go spend an hour or so training to get yourself stronger, fitter, and healthier, you're WRONG.

Ultimately, you're doing it for your FAMILY.

If you're a busy guy, I completely understand how it can get tough to find the time to train, but you must MAKE THE TIME.

You continue to think it's "selfish" to take time for yourself every once in a while, that's going to catch up to you quick and before you know it, you won't be much of a help at all.

How do I know?

I've talked with dozens upon dozens of men who've thought this way for years who've gotten so far out of shape and unfit, they now don't have much to give back to their family.

They're run down and sick.

You continue to neglect your own health and fitness, I think that's SELFISH.

Because what else are you doing then?

Eating like crap?

Sitting around being lazy?

For some guys, they use this all as an EXCUSE NOT to put time towards themselves.

Take the easy road out and say it's "SELFISH"

Bullshit.

Bottom line is this...

I'm NOT saying you need to be a Crossfit Games Competitor or the fittest guy around.

You don't have to have 6-pack abs or shirt sleeve ripping biceps...

You should have the energy to put towards your family when they want it.

You should be taking time for yourself so you're around for your family for years to come.

You should take time for yourself to BUILD YOURSELF IN TO THE BEST YOU POSSIBLE.

A better YOU = a better man for everyone.

Think about it like this...

You're a GREAT DAD right now, but your health and fitness are slacking big time.

You don't have the energy you'd like.

How's that having an effect on the bigger picture?

Are you being the BEST YOU you can be?

Change that by taking a bit more time for YOU, you now have more to give back to your family.

It's all about balance.

You neglect yourself out of the equation, there's going to be problems.

Don't think for one second you're being "selfish" if you're taking time to MAXIMIZE yourself as a man.

And screw the haters who say you're being "selfish" for taking time for yourself.

More than likely they need to take a long hard look in the mirror themselves and question what it is they're doing exactly.

Just do YOU and be the best damn man you can be.

REFUSE AVERAGE.
